How did shiplab become a trend?
Shiplap started as a material used by the Vikings to make their ships. It is essentially boards made of wood which are stacked on top of each other and added to a wall surface; these days, to create a rustic, or beachy look. The boards are held together with notches which work to make the surface watertight.
The great thing about shiplap wood is that it can easily add warmth and an additional layer of textural intrigue to what may otherwise have been boring blank walls. Plus, shiplap walls are incredibly durable and can withstand more wear than drywall. This makes it great for rooms like kitchens, bathroom, central high-traffic hallways. Shiplap is also a great option to cover a decrepit wall which needs some visual interest.
Often, a shiplap interior or exterior can look a little intense. As a result shiplap may not always work in a more modern home unless done with a lot of care and consideration. Shiplap looks right at home in a classic country-style house, or beach house. Used in kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and hallways it can look fantastic, but the style should look like a natural fit within your home.
